What does 2 Timothy 4:5 mean?

In 2 Timothy 4:5, Paul tells Timothy to remain clearheaded and continue the task entrusted to him, even when that brings hardship. Timothy is to give attention both to announcing the good news and to carrying out his wider service fully.

The opening “But thou” sets Timothy’s conduct against the turning away from truth described in verse 4. “Make full proof of thy ministry” uses older English for bringing his service to completion, rather than proving his worth to other people.
