Acts 15:18 (KJV)

What does Acts 15:18 mean?

Acts 15:18 states that God has always known everything He would do, from the very beginning of the world. This verse emphasizes that nothing about God's actions or plans is hidden or surprising to Him; everything unfolds according to His knowledge.

In the setting of Acts 15, James is speaking to the early church leaders in Jerusalem as they discuss whether Gentile believers must follow Jewish laws. James uses this statement to remind everyone that God’s plan to include the Gentiles was not a new idea, but something God had always intended and known about. This reassurance supports the decision to welcome Gentile believers without requiring them to become Jewish first.

The Greek behind Acts 15:18

• γνωστὰ (gnōsta, "Known"): This word means something that is well-known or made known, suggesting that God’s works are not hidden or mysterious to Him.
• ἔργα (erga, "works"): This word refers to deeds, actions, or things accomplished. Here, it points to everything God has done or will do, including His plan for salvation.
• ἀπ’ αἰῶνος (ap’ aiōnos, "from the beginning of the world"): This phrase can mean "from eternity" or "from ages past," highlighting the idea that God’s knowledge and plans go back as far as time itself.

Why Acts 15:18 matters

• Acts 15:18 clarifies that God’s inclusion of the Gentiles was not a sudden change or new development, but part of His eternal plan.
• The verse reassures the early church that God’s works and decisions are rooted in His complete knowledge, not in human tradition or surprise.
• By connecting God’s ancient knowledge to current events, Acts 15:18 helps the church see their situation as part of a much bigger story that God has always known and directed.
