What does Acts 15:8 mean?

Acts 15:8 says that God showed his acceptance of people from nations other than Israel by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he had given the Spirit to Peter and other Jewish believers. Peter offers this as evidence in a discussion about whether those people must follow the law of Moses.

Peter is speaking to the apostles and other believers gathered in Jerusalem. The phrase “bare them witness” pictures God acting as a witness on behalf of those people. God’s knowledge of their hearts gives weight to that witness: he knows them from within.

The Greek behind Acts 15:8

• “witness” — μαρτυρέω (martyreō): The word can mean to testify or give evidence. Here the giving of the Spirit is presented as God’s own testimony about the people being discussed.
• “hearts” — καρδία (kardia): The word often refers to a person’s inner life, including thoughts and intentions. Peter’s description of God points beyond what others can see on the outside.
• “Ghost” — πνεῦμα (pneuma): The word can mean “spirit.” “Holy Ghost” is the KJV’s way of saying “Holy Spirit”; “Ghost” here does not mean the spirit of a dead person.

Why Acts 15:8 matters

• The comparison includes Peter himself. “Even as he did unto us” points back to the Spirit given to Jesus’ Jewish followers, including at Pentecost in Acts 2.
• Peter’s evidence speaks directly to the dispute in Jerusalem. Some believers had argued that non-Jewish believers should be circumcised and told to keep the law of Moses (Acts 15:5).
• The verse refers to an event Peter’s listeners could recognize. In Acts 10:44–47, the Holy Spirit came upon the non-Jewish people listening in Cornelius’s house, before Peter ordered their baptism.
