What does Daniel 8:22 mean?

Daniel 8:22 explains that a great ruler’s kingdom will be divided among four successor kingdoms. Those kingdoms will emerge from the same nation, but none will have the strength that the original ruler had.

Gabriel is explaining Daniel’s vision to him. The broken horn in the vision represents the end of a ruler’s power, while the four horns that replace it represent the kingdoms that follow. Verse 21 identifies the first ruler with the kingdom of Greece.

The Hebrew behind Daniel 8:22

• “broken” — שָׁבַר (shavar): The word means to break or shatter. It connects the end of the ruler’s power with the horn that was broken in Daniel’s vision.
