What does Esther 7:10 mean?

Esther 7:10 brings Haman’s plot against Mordecai back upon Haman himself. The structure Haman had made for Mordecai becomes the place of Haman’s own death. Afterward, the king’s anger subsides.

The verse is told by the narrator, not spoken by a character. After the king’s command in verse 9, the sentence moves directly from Haman’s execution to the calming of the king’s anger.

The Hebrew behind Esther 7:10

• “gallows” — עֵץ (ʿets): The word can mean wood or a tree, and here refers to a wooden structure. The KJV calls it a “gallows,” though the word itself does not specify the exact design of the structure.
• “hanged” — תָּלָה (talah): The word carries the sense of hanging or suspending. It can describe a body being displayed on a structure, so the word alone does not establish whether Haman died by hanging with a rope.

Why Esther 7:10 matters

• The reversal is personal as well as public. Haman had prepared the structure for Mordecai, the man whose refusal to bow had angered him (Esther 3:2–5).
• The king’s anger has a specific cause in the passage. Esther had exposed Haman as the enemy behind the plan to destroy her people (Esther 7:4–6).
• Haman’s death does not by itself settle the danger to Esther’s people. The order against them remains a concern in the following chapter (Esther 8:3–8).
