What does Esther 7:9 mean?

Esther 7:9 shows a sharp reversal: the structure Haman prepared for Mordecai becomes the place where the king orders Haman’s death. Harbonah’s report also draws attention to Mordecai’s service to the king, making Haman’s intended target important to the king as well.

Harbonah is one of the king’s chamberlains, or court officials. He points out that the structure stands at Haman’s house and is fifty cubits high—roughly 75 feet, depending on the length of a cubit. The king responds with an immediate command.

Why Esther 7:9 matters

  • Mordecai’s earlier help to the king is part of Harbonah’s case. The description “who had spoken good for the king” recalls Mordecai’s report of a plot against the king in Esther 2:21–23.
  • Haman’s plan had already targeted Mordecai personally. Esther 5:14 describes the proposal to make the structure for Mordecai, so the king’s command turns Haman’s own preparation against him.
