What does Exodus 23:21 mean?

Exodus 23:21 presents God’s messenger as someone the Israelites must take seriously. God tells them to listen to the messenger and warns that rebellion against him has serious consequences, because the messenger acts with God’s authority.

God is speaking to the Israelites about the angel introduced in the previous verse. The phrase “my name is in him” connects the angel closely with the God who sends him. In this setting, a name points to the person who bears it.
