What does Ezekiel 1:18 mean?

Ezekiel 1:18 describes the towering rims of four wheels in Ezekiel’s vision. Their size is frightening, and eyes cover the rims all the way around. The image gives the wheels an extraordinary appearance, unlike ordinary wheels.

After describing the wheels’ appearance and movement in verses 16–17, Ezekiel draws attention to their rims. The eyes are spread around all four, making them a feature of the whole set of wheels.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 1:18

• “rings” — גַּב (gav): This word can mean a back or a curved outer part. Here it refers to the rims of the wheels, rather than separate rings.
• “dreadful” — יִרְאָה (yir’ah): This word can convey fear or awe. In this verse, the height of the rims gives them an imposing, frightening appearance.

Why Ezekiel 1:18 matters

• The wheels belong with the living creatures in the vision. Verse 19 says that the wheels move when the creatures move, linking the two parts of what Ezekiel sees.
• The eyes add to the sense that the wheels are more than ordinary objects. Ezekiel later describes the creatures’ bodies and wings as full of eyes too (Ezekiel 10:12).
