Ezekiel 11:3 reports the words of Jerusalem’s leaders, who treat danger as distant and speak of building houses. Their image of the city as a cooking pot and themselves as its meat suggests that they expect to remain secure inside Jerusalem.

The speakers are among the men whom Ezekiel sees at the city’s east gate. In their picture, the pot surrounds its contents, separating them from the fire outside. Their confidence matters because Ezekiel is told that these men are giving the city bad advice.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 11:3

• “caldron” — סִיר (sir): This means a cooking pot. The word helps make the image concrete: the leaders picture Jerusalem as a vessel with people inside it.
• “flesh” — בָּשָׂר (basar): This can mean flesh or meat. Here the word fits the cooking image, with the leaders placing themselves among the pot’s contents.

Why Ezekiel 11:3 matters
