What does Ezekiel 18:25 mean?

Ezekiel 18:25 presents God’s answer to Israelites who accuse him of being unfair. God challenges their accusation and asks them to consider whether their own conduct, rather than his judgments, is unjust.

After the warning in verse 24, God addresses the “house of Israel,” meaning the people of Israel. The two questions turn their complaint back toward them: they have been judging God’s conduct, but God asks them to examine their own.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 18:25

• “equal” — תָּכַן (takhan): This word carries the sense of being measured or made straight. Here, “equal” means fair or just, rather than identical.
• “way” — דֶּרֶךְ (derekh): This word can mean a road or path, but it also describes a course of conduct. The verse compares how God acts with how the people act.

Why Ezekiel 18:25 matters

• The complaint concerns God’s judgment of people who change their conduct. Verses 21–24 describe both a wicked person turning away from wrongdoing and a just person turning away from doing what is right.
