What does Ezekiel 36:12 mean?

Ezekiel 36:12 presents God’s promise that the land of Israel will again be home to his people. They will take possession of the land as their inheritance, and the land will no longer be associated with the loss of their people.

God speaks to the land as though it were a person, calling it “thee.” After the promise of increased population in verse 11, verse 12 identifies the inhabitants as “my people Israel.” The picture is of people walking on and living in a land that had suffered devastation.

The Hebrew behind Ezekiel 36:12

• “possess” — יָרַשׁ (yarash): This word can mean to take possession of something. Here it describes Israel taking hold of the land, not merely passing through it.
• “inheritance” — נַחֲלָה (naḥalah): This word refers to a possession received as a lasting share. It presents the land as belonging to the people across generations.
• “bereave” — שָׁכַל (shakhal): This word carries the sense of causing the loss of children. The KJV’s “bereave them of men” connects the land with the loss of its inhabitants.

Why Ezekiel 36:12 matters

• The promise answers a charge made against the land. In verse 13, the land is accused of devouring people and taking children from the nation; verse 12 reverses that picture.
• The land is addressed in personal terms, but the promised change concerns its inhabitants. “Thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them” describes what will happen to the people who live there.
• “My people Israel” gives a particular identity to those who will possess the land. The promise is not simply that the empty places will have residents.
