Genesis 20:4 (KJV)

What does Genesis 20:4 mean?

Genesis 20:4 shows Abimelech, a king, pleading with God after learning he may have unknowingly taken another man's wife. Abimelech asks God if He would destroy an innocent nation, since Abimelech had not yet approached Sarah or done anything wrong.

In this verse, Abimelech is speaking directly to God in a dream, defending himself and his people. The situation is tense: Abraham had said Sarah was his sister, leading Abimelech to take her, not knowing she was Abraham’s wife. Abimelech’s question highlights his innocence and concern that God might punish people who have not intentionally sinned.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 20:4

• אֲדֹנָי (’Adonai, "Lord"): This word is a respectful title for God, showing Abimelech’s recognition of God’s authority and power in this moment.
• הֲגֹוי (goy, "nation"): Abimelech refers not just to himself but to his whole people, showing his concern that God’s actions could affect many innocent lives.
• צַדִּיק (tsaddiq, "righteous"): This word means morally upright or innocent. Abimelech is emphasizing that neither he nor his people have knowingly done wrong, appealing to God’s justice.

Why Genesis 20:4 matters

• This verse clears up that Abimelech had not yet been intimate with Sarah, which is important for understanding his innocence and the seriousness of the situation.
• Abimelech’s plea shows that he sees God as just and fair, expecting that God would not punish those who are truly innocent.
• The verse connects to the wider story by showing the consequences of Abraham’s actions and the ripple effects on others, even those acting in good faith.
