Genesis 21:17 (KJV)

What does Genesis 21:17 mean?

Genesis 21:17 means that God heard the cries of Ishmael, Hagar’s son, and responded by sending an angel to comfort Hagar, telling her not to be afraid because God had heard her son’s voice where he was. The verse shows God’s awareness of their distress and His willingness to intervene.

In this scene, Hagar and her son Ishmael are in the wilderness, desperate and fearing for their lives after being sent away by Abraham. The angel of God calls to Hagar from heaven, addressing her by name and reassuring her. The verse highlights that God is attentive to the suffering of both Hagar and Ishmael, responding to their immediate need.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 21:17

• The word for "God" is אֱלֹהִים (’elohim), which is used twice in this verse, emphasizing God’s direct involvement and care.
• "Heard" is שָׁמַע (shama‘), meaning to listen or pay attention; here, it stresses that God is not distant but actively listening to Ishmael’s cries.
• "Voice" is קוֹל (qol), which can mean voice, sound, or cry. The focus is on the sound of Ishmael’s distress, not just his words.
• "Lad" is נַעַר (na‘ar), a term for a young boy or youth, reminding the reader of Ishmael’s vulnerability in this moment.

Why Genesis 21:17 matters

• Genesis 21:17 clarifies that God’s compassion extends to those who are outcasts or in distress, not just the main figures of the story.
• The verse emphasizes that God responds to the needs of individuals where they are, even in the wilderness and at their lowest point.
• This moment connects to the wider story by showing that God’s promises and care are not limited to Isaac and his line, but also reach Ishmael and Hagar.
