What does Genesis 31:19 mean?

Genesis 31:19 describes a secret theft that took place while Laban was away from home. Rachel took her father’s household images as Jacob and his family were preparing to leave. Her action adds a hidden complication to their departure.

The narrator tells the reader about the theft before the people in the story discover it. Laban’s absence for sheep shearing helps explain how Rachel had an opportunity to take the objects.
