Genesis 41:53 (KJV)

What does Genesis 41:53 mean?

Genesis 41:53 states that the seven years of great abundance in Egypt came to an end. This verse marks the transition from a period of plenty to the beginning of the famine that Joseph had warned Pharaoh about.

Pharaoh is the ruler of Egypt, and Joseph is the Hebrew official who interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams. The verse comes after Joseph’s rise to power and his management of Egypt’s food supply during the years of abundance. Genesis 41:53 signals a turning point in the story, where the preparations Joseph made during the years of plenteousness become crucial for what follows.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 41:53

• "plenteousness" (שָׂבָע, savaʿ): This word means abundance or fullness, often used for times when crops or resources are unusually plentiful. Its use here emphasizes just how exceptional these seven years were for Egypt.
• "ended" (כָּלָה, kalah): This word means to be finished or completed. It highlights that the period of abundance did not last indefinitely but had a clear endpoint, setting up the urgency for what comes next.

Why Genesis 41:53 matters

• Genesis 41:53 clarifies that the abundance was not permanent, underscoring the importance of Joseph’s foresight in storing food during the good years.
• The verse prepares the reader for the coming famine, which is central to the next part of Joseph’s story and his family’s eventual arrival in Egypt.
• By marking the end of the good years, Genesis 41:53 stresses the reliability of Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams and God’s control over the events in Egypt.
