What does Genesis 50:2 mean?

Genesis 50:2 describes Joseph arranging for his father’s body to be preserved after his death. Joseph gives the order to physicians among his servants, and they carry it out. The verse shows an Egyptian burial practice being used for Joseph’s father.

After Joseph’s grief in verse 1, the account turns to the care of the body. The name “Israel” refers to Joseph’s father, also known as Jacob. Embalming prepared his body for burial rather than immediate burial in Egypt.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 50:2

• “physicians” — רֹפְאִים (rofe’im): The word means healers or doctors. Genesis 50:2 identifies the people who prepare the body by their usual work of caring for the living.
• “embalm” — חָנַט (chanat): The word carries the sense of treating a body for preservation after death. Here, the action prepares Jacob’s body for the journey and burial described later in the passage.

Why Genesis 50:2 matters

• Joseph directs the arrangements, but others do the work. The verse distinguishes his command from the physicians’ action, showing his authority over the servants involved.
• Preserving the body fits Jacob’s burial request. Jacob had asked to be buried with his family in Canaan (Genesis 49:29–32), and the later journey takes his body there (Genesis 50:12–13).
• The preparation is part of an extended period of mourning. Genesis 50:3 describes forty days for the embalming and seventy days of mourning by the Egyptians, showing the public attention given to Jacob’s death.
