What does Genesis 7:5 mean?

Genesis 7:5 tells the reader that Noah carried out the LORD’s instructions as the flood approached. The sentence presents Noah’s response as complete: he acted according to everything the LORD had commanded him.

The narrator makes this statement after the LORD tells Noah that rain will begin in seven days. The word “all” gives the sentence its emphasis: Noah’s response covered the instructions as a whole.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 7:5

• “did” — עָשָׂה (ʿasah): This word often means “do” or “make.” Here it describes Noah’s action in response to instructions, rather than simply his agreement with them.
• “LORD” — יהוה (YHWH): This is God’s personal name in the Hebrew text. The KJV prints it as “LORD” in capital letters, distinguishing the name from the ordinary title “Lord.”

Why Genesis 7:5 matters

• The verse connects Noah’s actions to specific directions. Earlier in the passage, the LORD tells Noah to enter the ark with his household and gives instructions about the animals (Genesis 7:1–3).
