What does Hosea 9:6 mean?

Hosea 9:6 warns that people fleeing destruction will find death in Egypt rather than a lasting refuge. Meanwhile, their valuable possessions and homes will be left to weeds and thorns. The verse pictures a loss that reaches both the people and the places they leave behind.

Hosea speaks about the people of Israel after asking what they will do on the day of the Lord’s feast in verse 5. Memphis, a major Egyptian city, becomes a place of burial. The overgrown homes suggest that their owners will not be there to care for them.
