What does Hosea 9:1 mean?

Hosea 9:1 tells Israel not to celebrate its harvest like other nations. Hosea says the people have turned away from their God and have treated the grain they received as payment for being unfaithful to him.

Hosea uses the picture of a person being unfaithful in a marriage. The “cornfloor” was a place where harvested grain was beaten or trampled to separate it from the stalks. It was a natural setting for harvest celebrations, but Hosea connects the grain there with Israel’s unfaithfulness.

The Hebrew behind Hosea 9:1

• “whoring” — זָנָה (zanah): This word can describe selling sex. Here, Hosea uses that image to describe Israel’s departure from its God.
• “reward” — אֶתְנָן (ʾetnan): This word can mean payment given for sex. It makes the harvest image more pointed: the grain is pictured as payment for unfaithfulness.
• “cornfloor” — גֹּרֶן (goren): This means a threshing floor, where people separated grain from the rest of the plant. “Corn” in the KJV means grain, not specifically the maize familiar today.

Why Hosea 9:1 matters

• The command is addressed to the whole nation, not just to one person. Hosea names “Israel” and says the people have gone away from “thy God.”
• The harvest celebration cannot be separated from how Hosea describes the people’s conduct. The word “for” gives his reason for the command not to rejoice.
• The warning continues into the next verse, where Hosea says the threshing floor and winepress will not feed the people as they expect. That consequence gives weight to his warning at the time of harvest.
