Jeremiah 15:1 (KJV)

What does Jeremiah 15:1 mean?

Jeremiah 15:1 records God telling Jeremiah that even if Moses and Samuel—the most respected mediators in Israel’s history—stood before Him to plead for the people, God would still refuse to show favor or change His mind; instead, He commands that the people be sent away from His presence. This verse shows that the people’s wrongdoing has reached a point where not even the greatest intercessors could help them.

In this verse, God is speaking directly to Jeremiah, who has been praying and pleading for mercy on behalf of the people of Judah. By mentioning Moses and Samuel, God refers to two figures known for successfully praying for Israel in desperate times. The situation is so serious that God says not even their prayers would make a difference now, highlighting the depth of the nation’s broken relationship with Him.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 15:1

• "stood" (עָמַד, ʿamad): This word often means to stand in the sense of taking a position before someone in authority, especially to intercede or plead. Here, it emphasizes the idea of Moses and Samuel acting as go-betweens, yet even their presence would not sway God.
• "mind" (נֶפֶשׁ, nefesh): While often translated as "soul" or "life," here it is used to express God’s inner attitude or willingness. The phrase means God’s heart or favor is no longer turned toward the people.
• "cast them out" (שָׁלַח, shalach): This verb means to send away or drive out. God is not just ignoring the people but actively commanding their removal from His presence, which is a strong statement of rejection.
• "before" and "sight" (פָּנִים, panim): This word appears twice, meaning "face" or "presence." The repetition stresses the personal nature of God’s rejection—the people are being sent away from direct relationship with Him.

Why Jeremiah 15:1 matters

• This verse clears up any idea that God’s mercy is automatic or can always be secured by someone else’s prayers; there are times when persistent wrongdoing leads to real consequences.
• By naming Moses and Samuel, Jeremiah 15:1 connects to earlier stories where God relented because of faithful intercessors, showing just how far the people have fallen now.
• The verse sets the tone for the surrounding passage, where God explains the seriousness of Judah’s situation and the limits of prophetic intercession.
