What does Jeremiah 3:15 mean?

God promises to give his returning people leaders who reflect his own purposes and guide them with knowledge and sound judgment. The promise belongs to God’s call for unfaithful Israel to return to him and his pledge to bring them to Zion.

The key is the connection between “pastors” and “feed.” The Hebrew uses the same shepherding word: רֹעִים (ro‘im), “shepherds,” and וְרָעוּ (vera‘u), “they will shepherd.” The KJV’s “pastors” means shepherd-leaders; the word does not identify only the church office now commonly called pastor. These leaders will care for God’s people as shepherds care for a flock, with “knowledge and understanding” describing their guidance.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 3:15

• “give” — וְנָתַתִּי (venatatti): “I will give,” from נָתַן (natan), meaning “give” or “provide.” God is the speaker and the one who will provide these leaders as part of the promised restoration.

• “heart” — לִבִּי (libbi): “My heart,” from לֵב (lev). In Hebrew, the heart includes thought, intention, and will as well as feeling. “According to mine heart” describes leaders whose conduct agrees with God’s purposes.

• “knowledge” — דֵּעָה (de‘ah): Knowledge or knowing. Here, knowledge is what the shepherds supply through their leadership. Within this call to return to God, the word points to informed guidance in God’s ways, rather than leadership that leaves the people ignorant.

• “understanding” — הַשְׂכֵּיל (haskel): A form expressing insight or sound judgment. Alongside “knowledge,” the word emphasizes the ability to understand and act wisely. The promised leaders will guide with discernment.

Why Jeremiah 3:15 matters

• The promise concerns the restoration of a people. The surrounding verses address unfaithful Israel and promise a return to Zion; providing faithful leaders belongs to that restoration.

• The quality of leadership has two connected measures. “According to mine heart” identifies agreement with God’s purposes, while “knowledge and understanding” describes the guidance those leaders will provide.
