Jeremiah 5:29 (KJV)

What does Jeremiah 5:29 mean?

Jeremiah 5:29 records God asking if He should not respond to the wrongdoing He sees, declaring that He will bring justice to a nation acting so corruptly. The verse shows God’s determination to hold the people accountable for their actions.

In this verse, God is speaking through the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah. The situation is one of widespread injustice and unfaithfulness among the people. God’s question is rhetorical, emphasizing that it would be wrong for Him to ignore such behavior, and that judgment is a necessary response to their persistent wrongdoing.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 5:29

• “visit” (פָּקַד, paqad): This word often means to attend to, punish, or hold accountable. Here, it points to God’s active intervention, not just a casual visit but a decisive act of justice.
• “soul” (נֶפֶשׁ, nefesh): This word means “life” or “inner being.” When God says “my soul be avenged,” it expresses deep personal involvement and emotion, not just a distant or impersonal act.
• “avenged” (נָקַם, naqam): This word means to take vengeance or bring retribution. It highlights that God’s response is about setting things right, not just anger or revenge.
• “nation” (גּוֹי, goy): This term refers to a people group or nation, often used for non-Israelites but here applied to Judah, emphasizing their actions have made them no different from other nations in God’s eyes.

Why Jeremiah 5:29 matters

• The verse clarifies that God’s justice is not automatic or indifferent; it is a deliberate response to real wrongdoing, showing His personal concern for what is right.
• By calling Judah a “nation” (גּוֹי, goy), the verse underscores how their behavior has distanced them from their unique relationship with God, treating them as He would any other people who act unjustly.
• Jeremiah 5:29 is part of a larger warning, stressing that God’s patience has limits and that persistent injustice will eventually bring consequences, setting the stage for the coming judgment described in the following chapters.
