Judges 8:19 (KJV)

What does Judges 8:19 mean?

Judges 8:19 records Gideon telling the men of Zebah and Zalmunna that the people they killed were his own brothers, the sons of his mother, and that if they had spared them, he would not be about to kill them. Gideon swears by the life of the LORD that their fate is sealed because of what they did to his family.

Gideon is speaking directly to Zebah and Zalmunna, two captured Midianite kings, during a tense confrontation after a battle. The verse shows the personal nature of Gideon's actions—he is not just acting as a judge or leader but as a brother seeking justice for his slain family. The oath "as the LORD liveth" underlines the seriousness and finality of his words.

The Hebrew behind Judges 8:19

• "brethren" (אַחַי, ’achai): This word means "brothers" and emphasizes the close family bond, making Gideon's motive deeply personal.
• "sons" (בְּנֵי, b'nei): This word means "sons," specifying that the victims were not just relatives but direct siblings from the same mother.
• "mother" (אֵם, ’em): Mentioning "mother" highlights the full brotherhood, not just half-brothers, intensifying the sense of loss and duty.
• "LORD" (יְהוָה, YHWH): Gideon swears by the personal name of God, showing the seriousness and solemnity of his declaration.
• "liveth" (חַי, chai): This word means "alive" or "living," used in oaths to stress truthfulness and resolve.
• "slay" (הָרַג, harag): This word means "to kill" or "to slay," making clear that Gideon's intention is to execute justice, not just threaten.
