What does Judges 8:24 mean?

Judges 8:24 describes Gideon asking the Israelites to contribute part of the valuables they had taken from defeated enemies. His request concerns one piece of jewelry from each man’s share, rather than all the goods collected in the fighting.

Coming just after Gideon declines an offer of rule in verse 23, the request introduces a different kind of claim on the people. The parenthesis explains why gold earrings were available: the defeated people are called Ishmaelites.

The Hebrew behind Judges 8:24

• “earrings” — נֶזֶם (nezem): This word means a ring or piece of jewelry and can refer to a nose ring as well as an earring. The KJV presents the requested objects as earrings.
• “prey” — שָׁלָל (shalal): This word refers to goods taken from an enemy, especially after a battle. It makes clear that the earrings came from what the men had captured.

Why Judges 8:24 matters

• The request is directed to the whole group, not just to its leaders. Gideon asks that “every man” give an earring from his own share.
• The name “Ishmaelites” identifies the people from whom the gold came. The surrounding account also calls the defeated enemies Midianites; Judges 8:24 uses “Ishmaelites” when explaining their gold earrings.
• The request sets up what follows. In verses 26–27, Gideon uses the collected gold to make an ephod, an object associated with worship, and the account says Israel later treats it as an object of unfaithful worship.
