What does Leviticus 5:2 mean?

Leviticus 5:2 describes a person who touches the dead body of an animal classed as unclean under Israel’s laws. Even if the contact is hidden from the person, the verse says that the person becomes unclean and is guilty.

The verse names wild animals, livestock, and small creatures that move along the ground. Its concern is contact with their dead bodies, not simply seeing or being near a living animal.

The Hebrew behind Leviticus 5:2

• “soul” — נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh): This word can mean a living person. Here it refers to whoever has made the contact, rather than to a separate part of that person.
• “unclean” — טָמֵא (tame): This word describes a state of uncleanness under Israel’s laws. In this setting, the word is about a person’s status after contact with a dead animal, not merely about dirt.
• “guilty” — אָשֵׁם (asham): This word can carry the sense of being liable or responsible. The verse places the person under the law’s requirement even when the contact has been hidden from them.

Why Leviticus 5:2 matters
