What does Leviticus 6:30 mean?

Leviticus 6:30 gives a special rule for a sin offering, an animal offered in response to wrongdoing. When some of the animal’s blood is taken into the sacred tent for the purpose the KJV calls “to reconcile,” no part of that offering is to be eaten. The offering must instead be burned.

The rule comes as an exception to the instruction that priests may eat certain sin offerings. The blood’s destination marks the difference: it is brought into the “tabernacle of the congregation,” the tent where Israel gathered to meet with God.

The Hebrew behind Leviticus 6:30

• “sin offering” — חַטָּאת (ḥaṭṭaʾt): This Hebrew word can refer either to a sin or to an offering made because of sin. Here the word refers to the offering, since the verse speaks of its blood and of burning it.
• “to reconcile” — כָּפַר (kaphar): Here the word refers to dealing with wrongdoing through the prescribed offering. The KJV’s “reconcile” describes the purpose for which the blood is brought into the holy place.

Why Leviticus 6:30 matters

• The rule does not treat every sin offering alike. The words “whereof any of the blood is brought” identify the offerings to which this special instruction applies.
• The instruction addresses the handling of the offering itself, not just the blood. The command “it shall be burnt in the fire” tells the priests what to do with the offering after the blood is brought inside.
• The distinction appears elsewhere in the instructions for sacrifices. In Leviticus 4:13–21, blood from an offering for the whole community is brought into the tent, and the rest of the animal is burned outside the camp.
