What does Numbers 20:10 mean?

Numbers 20:10 shows Moses addressing the thirsty Israelites with sharp frustration. He calls them rebels and asks whether he and Aaron must bring water from the rock. His question puts the people’s resistance and the extraordinary task before them in the same tense moment.

The rock is the object God has told Moses to speak to in verse 8. Moses’ words, “must we fetch you water,” place him and Aaron at the center of the question. The congregation is gathered in front of the rock to hear him.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 20:10

• “Hear” — שָׁמַע (shamaʿ): This word can mean to listen or pay attention. Moses uses it to demand the congregation’s attention before his question.
• “rebels” — מָרָה (marah): The word carries the sense of resisting or being defiant. Moses addresses the assembled people by their resistance rather than by their names.
