What does Numbers 31:19 mean?

Numbers 31:19 gives instructions to Israelites returning from battle. Those who killed someone or touched a dead person were to stay outside the camp for seven days and purify themselves and their captives on the third and seventh days. The instruction treats contact with death as something requiring a prescribed cleansing before return to the camp.

Moses speaks to the returning soldiers after the battle against Midian. “Without the camp” means outside the place where the Israelites were living. His words address both the fighters and the captives they brought back.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 31:19

• “purify” — חָטָא (ḥaṭaʾ): Here the word carries the sense of cleansing from impurity. In this verse, the concern is the condition resulting from contact with death.
• “person” — נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh): This word can refer to a living person or life. Here it stands behind “any person,” making the instruction apply to anyone who had killed a human being.

Why Numbers 31:19 matters

• Killing and touching the dead are both named as reasons for the instruction. Moses says “whosoever hath killed” and “whosoever hath touched,” so the direction reaches beyond those who struck a fatal blow.
