Numbers 36:10 (KJV)

What does Numbers 36:10 mean?

Numbers 36:10 states that the daughters of Zelophehad did exactly as the LORD commanded Moses. This verse shows their obedience to the instructions given regarding inheritance and marriage within their tribe.

The verse comes at the end of a discussion about how the daughters of Zelophehad, whose father died without sons, should handle their inheritance. Moses had received a command from the LORD (H3068) about this situation, and the daughters are now shown following those instructions. This simple statement highlights their respect for God's direction and their willingness to follow the law as it was given through Moses.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 36:10

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing that the command comes directly from Israel’s God, not just from Moses’ own authority.
• commanded (צָוָה, tsavah): This word means to order or instruct, stressing that what Moses passed on was not a suggestion but a binding directive from God.
• did (עָשָׂה, asah): This verb means to do or to make, and here it underscores the daughters’ active obedience—they carried out exactly what was required.
• daughters (בַּת, bat): The use of this word reminds the reader that these were women acting in a legal matter, which was significant in their cultural context.
• Zelophehad (צְלָפְחָד, Tselofchad): The name identifies the specific family involved, connecting this verse to the earlier narrative about inheritance rights.

Why Numbers 36:10 matters

• Numbers 36:10 clears up any question about whether the daughters of Zelophehad accepted the ruling—they did, without protest or delay.
• The verse emphasizes the importance of following God’s commands exactly, even in complex or personal situations like inheritance and marriage.
• This statement connects back to the earlier chapters (Numbers 27 and 36), showing the resolution of a legal and social issue in Israel’s early history and affirming the role of women in upholding God’s law.
