What does Philippians 1:12 mean?

Philippians 1:12 tells Paul’s readers that his troubles have helped the good news about Jesus spread. What might have seemed like a setback for Paul has instead opened opportunities for more people to hear that message.

Paul addresses the readers as “brethren,” a family term for fellow believers. He wants them to understand the effect of “the things which happened unto me,” a phrase that includes his imprisonment, mentioned in the following verses.

The Greek behind Philippians 1:12

• “furtherance” — προκοπή (prokopē): This word carries the sense of progress or advancement. Paul describes the good news as moving forward, despite the difficulty of his circumstances.
• “rather” — μᾶλλον (mallon): This word can mean “instead” or “more.” Here it highlights a contrast between an expected setback and the actual result.

Why Philippians 1:12 matters

• Paul’s concern is wider than his own situation. His measure of what has happened is the “furtherance of the gospel,” the spread of the good news about Jesus.
• The following verses show how Paul’s imprisonment contributed to that progress. Philippians 1:13 says that people throughout the palace guard and beyond learned that his imprisonment was connected with Christ.
