What does Proverbs 12:11 mean?

Proverbs 12:11 contrasts productive work with the poor judgment of chasing after “vain persons.” In the farming picture, tending one’s own land leads to enough food, while following people associated with emptiness or worthlessness shows a lack of understanding.

The proverb uses bread, a familiar daily food, to picture having enough to eat. Its two halves also move from an outward result, being fed, to an inward quality: the judgment shown by a person’s choice of company.
