The Hebrew behind Psalms 136:18

• “Slew” (הָרַג, harag) means to kill or strike down. The word emphasizes God’s decisive action against Israel’s enemies, showing his direct involvement.
• “Famous” (אַדִּיר, addir) means mighty, noble, or well-known. This word points out that these kings were not ordinary opponents; they were respected and powerful, making God’s victory even more significant.
• “Kings” (מֶלֶךְ, melech) simply means rulers or monarchs, highlighting the high status of those defeated.
• “Mercy” (חֶסֶד, chesed) is often translated as steadfast love or lovingkindness. It refers to God’s loyal, covenant-based love for his people, which is the main theme repeated throughout the psalm.
• “Ever” (עוֹלָם, olam) means forever or everlasting, stressing that God’s mercy is not temporary but endures through all generations.
