What does Psalms 136:2 mean?

Psalms 136:2 calls people to thank the God who stands above every other god. The reason given is that his mercy lasts forever: his care for his people is not temporary or uncertain.

The speaker addresses a group, inviting them to join in thanks. After the general call to thank the Lord in verse 1, the phrase “God of gods” gives a particular reason for honoring him: his place above all others called gods.
