What does Psalms 75:6 mean?

Psalms 75:6 says that “promotion”—being raised to a position of honor or power—does not come from any earthly direction. The verse challenges the idea that a person can secure a higher standing by looking to human sources of power.

The verse follows a warning against speaking proudly in verse 5. East, west, and south picture far-off places to which someone might look for help or advantage. The sentence continues into verse 7, where God is named as the one who judges.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 75:6

  • “promotion” — רוּם (rum): The word carries the idea of being raised or lifted up. In this setting, the KJV uses “promotion” for a rise in standing, not merely advancement in a job.
  • “south” — מִדְבָּר (midbar): The word often means wilderness or desert. The KJV renders the location as “south,” a direction associated with desert lands from Israel’s point of view.

Why Psalms 75:6 matters
