What does Psalms 77:8 mean?

Psalms 77:8 gives voice to a troubled speaker who wonders whether God’s kindness and trustworthiness have come to an end. The questions show how deeply his distress has affected his view of God: he fears that what he once counted on may no longer be there.

The speaker addresses these questions to himself, asking about God rather than speaking directly to him. After the question about God’s favor in verse 7, he brings his fear into sharper focus by asking about God’s mercy and promise.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 77:8

• “mercy” — חֶסֶד (ḥesed): This word often means steadfast kindness or loyal love. It suggests kindness that continues within a relationship, rather than a single act of pity.
• “evermore” — דּוֹר (dor): This word means a generation. Its repetition in the Hebrew gives the sense of generation after generation, adding a picture of passing time to the KJV’s “evermore.”

Why Psalms 77:8 matters

• The verse records questions, not settled answers. The speaker asks, “Is his mercy clean gone?” rather than declaring that God’s mercy has ended.
