What does Romans 5:2 mean?

Romans 5:2 says that through Jesus Christ, believers have come by faith into a position of favor with God. Paul describes that position as one in which they now stand, while they look forward with joy to sharing in God’s glory.

Following the mention of Jesus Christ in verse 1, “by whom” points back to him. Paul’s picture of access suggests being brought into the presence of someone important. “We” includes Paul with those who share this faith.

The Greek behind Romans 5:2

• “access” — προσαγωγή (prosagōgē): This word carries the sense of an introduction or a way of being brought near. It can suggest being brought before a person of high standing.
• “stand” — ἵστημι (histēmi): This word can mean to stand firm or remain in a position. Here it presents grace as the place where believers continue to stand.
• “rejoice” — καυχάομαι (kauchaomai): This word can carry the sense of boasting or taking pride in something. Paul uses it to express a confident joy centered on the hope he names.

Why Romans 5:2 matters

• The verse joins a present position with a future hope. “Wherein we stand” describes their present place in God’s favor, while “hope of the glory of God” points ahead.
• Paul’s confidence rests on what God has done through Jesus. The words “by whom” connect access to Jesus, rather than to the standing a person could claim on their own.
• The hope of glory belongs within a passage that also speaks honestly about suffering. In verses 3–4, Paul goes on to connect suffering with endurance and hope.
