What does Romans 6:4 mean?

Romans 6:4 connects baptism with a decisive change in life. Paul describes believers as buried with Christ through baptism and says that, just as Christ was raised from the dead, they should live in a new way.

The picture of burial gives weight to the connection with Christ’s death introduced in verse 3. Paul then turns to Christ’s resurrection: the Father’s glory is the power associated with raising him.

The Greek behind Romans 6:4

• “buried with” — συνθάπτω (synthaptō): This word carries the sense of being buried together. The connection with Christ is built into the Greek word itself.
• “walk” — περιπατέω (peripateō): This word can mean to walk around, but it is also used for the way someone lives. Here it describes the course of a person’s life, not simply movement on foot.
• “newness” — καινότης (kainotēs): This word refers to a new quality or condition. With “life,” it points to a changed kind of life rather than simply more years of living.
