Zephaniah 2:11 (KJV)

What does Zephaniah 2:11 mean?

Zephaniah 2:11 says that the LORD will show his power against the nations by making their gods powerless, so that people everywhere—even in distant lands—will end up worshiping the LORD instead. The verse describes a future where the LORD alone is honored, and the false gods lose all influence.

The prophet Zephaniah is speaking to the people of Judah, warning them about coming judgment on surrounding nations and their idols. The verse uses strong language to show that the LORD will act in a way that leaves no doubt about his supremacy, even reaching the “isles of the heathen”—a phrase meaning far-off, non-Israelite lands. This points to a time when worship of the LORD will not be limited to Israel, but will spread across the world.

The Hebrew behind Zephaniah 2:11

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of Israel’s God, emphasizing that it is not just any god, but the specific God of the Bible who will act.
• famish (רָזָה, razah): This word means to make lean or starve. The verse pictures the LORD “starving” the gods of the earth, meaning he will take away their power and influence so they are left with nothing.
• gods (אֱלֹהִים, elohim): This word can mean gods or mighty ones. Here it refers to the idols or deities worshiped by other nations, showing that they are powerless before the LORD.
• isles (אִי, ’i): This word often means distant coastlands or islands, suggesting that even people far from Israel will come to worship the LORD.

Why Zephaniah 2:11 matters

• Zephaniah 2:11 clarifies that the LORD’s authority is not just over Israel, but over all nations and their gods, challenging the idea that each nation’s god is supreme in its own land.
• The verse shifts the focus from judgment alone to a future hope, where people everywhere will recognize and worship the LORD.
• This verse connects to the larger theme in Zephaniah of God’s universal reign and the eventual gathering of worshipers from all nations, not just Israel.
