1 Samuel 14:23 (KJV)

What does 1 Samuel 14:23 mean?

1 Samuel 14:23 states that the LORD rescued Israel on that particular day, and the fighting moved on to a place called Bethaven. The verse credits God with saving the Israelites during a battle and notes that the conflict continued as the enemy retreated.

This verse comes in the middle of a story where Saul and his son Jonathan are leading Israel against the Philistines. Jonathan had just taken a bold action that turned the tide of the battle. The verse emphasizes that the victory was not just due to military skill, but because the LORD (the God of Israel) intervened to save His people. The mention of Bethaven marks the direction in which the battle shifted as the Philistines fled.

The Hebrew behind 1 Samuel 14:23

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of Israel’s God, highlighting that it was specifically Israel’s God who acted to save them, not just a generic deity.
• saved (יָשַׁע, yasha): This word means to deliver or rescue, often used for God’s acts of salvation in crisis moments. It stresses that the victory was a rescue operation by God, not just a military win.
• over (עָבַר, avar): This word means to pass over or move across. Here, it shows the physical movement of the battle as it shifted location, signaling the enemy’s retreat and the change in momentum.
• Bethaven (בֵּית אָוֶן, Bet-Aven): The name means "house of wickedness" or "house of trouble." Mentioning this place helps readers track the battle’s progress and may carry a hint of irony, since the enemy is being driven toward a place with a negative name.

Why 1 Samuel 14:23 matters

• The verse clarifies that Israel’s victory was due to divine intervention, not just human effort or strategy, which is a key theme in the book of Samuel.
• By naming Bethaven, the verse helps situate the story geographically and shows the real movement of armies, grounding the story in actual places.
• The verse connects to the larger narrative by showing the ongoing struggle between Israel and the Philistines, and how God’s help was decisive at critical moments.
