1 Samuel 30:23 (KJV)

What does 1 Samuel 30:23 mean?

1 Samuel 30:23 shows David telling his men that they should not act selfishly with the things God has given them, because it was the LORD who protected them and gave them victory over their enemies. David is reminding them that their success and the spoils they gained are gifts from God, not just the result of their own efforts.

In this scene, David is speaking to his own followers after they have recovered their families and possessions from a raiding party. Some of his men wanted to keep all the recovered goods for themselves and not share with those who were too exhausted to fight. David corrects them, emphasizing that everything they have is due to God's help and protection, so it would be wrong to withhold from others.

The Hebrew behind 1 Samuel 30:23

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, highlighting that David credits their victory directly to God’s intervention, not just a generic deity.
• given (נָתַן, natan): This word means "to give," and David uses it twice—once for what God has given them, and again for God delivering their enemies into their hand. It underlines that both their possessions and their victory are gifts, not earned solely by their own strength.
• preserved (שָׁמַר, shamar): This word means "to keep" or "to guard." David points out that God not only gave them victory but also protected them throughout the ordeal.
• brethren (אַח, ach): David calls his men "brothers," appealing to their shared identity and unity, rather than letting division or selfishness take root.

Why 1 Samuel 30:23 matters

• This verse clarifies that David saw all success and provision as coming from God, not just from human effort or military skill.
• David’s response sets a principle of fairness and generosity, showing that those who were unable to fight still deserved a share because the victory was God’s gift to all.
• The verse connects to the wider story by showing David’s leadership style—he unites his followers and points them back to dependence on God, preventing division after a hard-won victory.
