What does Ecclesiastes 3:18 mean?

Ecclesiastes 3:18 presents a sobering thought about human life: God exposes the human condition so that people can recognize their kinship with animals. The comparison points especially to the death that humans and animals share, as the next verses make clear.

“I said in mine heart” introduces the speaker’s private reflection. After considering injustice and God’s judgment in the preceding verses, the speaker turns to what human beings can see about their own condition. The word “beasts” places humans alongside the animals whose lives also end.
