What does Ecclesiastes 3:21 mean?

Ecclesiastes 3:21 asks who can know where the spirit of a person or an animal goes after death. In the KJV, the question contrasts a human spirit going upward with an animal’s spirit going down to the earth. The speaker calls attention to the difficulty of knowing what happens beyond death.

After verse 20 describes humans and animals returning to dust, the speaker turns from their bodies to their spirits. The directions “upward” and “downward” picture different destinations, but the opening question, “Who knoweth,” puts the emphasis on what can be known.
