What does Hosea 5:6 mean?

Hosea 5:6 says that the people will approach the LORD with animals for offerings, yet their offerings will not bring them the response they seek. God has withdrawn from them. The verse presents their effort as coming too late to prevent the trouble Hosea has been warning about.

The flocks and herds picture a public act of worship involving valuable animals. After the warning that Israel and Judah would fall in verse 5, Hosea describes their attempt to seek the LORD. The words “withdrawn himself” picture God as someone who has departed and cannot be found by their search.

The Hebrew behind Hosea 5:6

• “seek” — בָּקַשׁ (baqash): This word means to look for or seek someone or something. Here it describes an approach to the LORD with animals, not merely an inward wish.
• “withdrawn” — חָלַץ (chalats): This word can carry the sense of drawing away or withdrawing. In this verse, it gives a vivid picture of the LORD removing himself from the people’s reach.

Why Hosea 5:6 matters

• The verse contrasts the size of the people’s offering with its result. They bring both “flocks” and “herds,” yet “shall not find him.”
• The setting gives their search a particular weight: Hosea has already accused the people of wrongdoing and warned of a fall in verses 4–5. Hosea 5:6 places their visit to seek the LORD after that warning.
• The withdrawal is not presented as the last word in the passage. In verse 15, the LORD speaks of the people acknowledging their guilt and seeking him in their distress.
