Isaiah 19:18 (KJV)

What does Isaiah 19:18 mean?

Isaiah 19:18 says that in a future time, five cities in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and make promises to the LORD of hosts, with one city being called "The city of destruction." This verse points to a dramatic change in Egypt, where some of its people will turn toward the God of Israel and adopt His ways.

Isaiah is speaking to the people of Judah about Egypt’s future. The verse uses the image of Egyptian cities speaking the "language of Canaan" (the language of the Israelites) to show a shift in allegiance and worship. Swearing to the LORD (using the special name for Israel’s God) signals a deep commitment, and the mention of a city called "destruction" is likely a wordplay or a sign of transformation, though the exact meaning is debated.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 19:18

• The word for "language" is שָׂפָה (safah), which literally means "lip" but is often used for "language" or "speech." This shows a complete cultural and religious shift, not just a casual change in words.
• "Swear" is שָׁבַע (shava), which means to make a solemn oath. Here, it highlights a binding commitment to the LORD (יְהוָה, Yahweh), not just a passing interest.
• The phrase "city of destruction" uses עִיר הַהֶרֶס (ir haheres). Some ancient versions read "city of the sun" instead, so the name might carry a double meaning—either a place transformed from idolatry or a new center of worship.

Why Isaiah 19:18 matters

• This verse clears up the idea that Egypt is always pictured as an enemy in the Bible; here, Egyptians are shown as turning to Israel’s God.
• The verse emphasizes that God’s influence can reach even foreign nations, not just Israel.
• In the wider passage, Isaiah 19 describes judgment on Egypt, but this verse stands out as a promise of hope and inclusion for those who turn to the LORD.
