What does Isaiah 40:3 mean?

Isaiah 40:3 announces that the LORD is coming to his people. A voice calls for a road to be made ready for him across the wilderness. The image presents God’s arrival as an event important enough to demand preparation.

The verse follows the message of comfort addressed to Jerusalem in verse 2. Its picture is like the clearing and leveling of a route for an approaching ruler. The voice speaks as a public herald, calling others to prepare the road.

The Hebrew behind Isaiah 40:3

  • “Prepare” — פָּנָה (panah): The word can carry the sense of clearing something away. Here it suggests removing obstacles from the route.
  • “straight” — יָשַׁר (yashar): This word can mean making something level or even. It adds the picture of a smooth road, not just one without bends.
  • “desert” — עֲרָבָה (ʿaravah): The word refers to a dry, open region or plain. It gives the imagined road a particular setting: land where travel could be difficult.

Why Isaiah 40:3 matters

  • The road is for God, not simply for travelers. The words “a highway for our God” make his arrival the focus of the command.
  • The landscape is part of the message. In verses 4–5, valleys are raised and rough ground is made level, so that the LORD’s glory can be seen by all people.
  • Later writers connect the voice to John the Baptist. Matthew 3:1–3 applies Isaiah’s words to John as he calls people to turn from wrongdoing and prepare for the one coming after him.
