What does Jeremiah 30:8 mean?

Jeremiah 30:8 describes God’s promise to free his people from foreign domination. The verse presents that freedom as God’s own action: he will remove the burden imposed on them and end their forced service to outsiders.

The picture of a yoke comes from a wooden bar placed on animals so they could be made to work. After the time of distress described in verse 7, God speaks of breaking that image of control. “The LORD of hosts” presents the speaker as the Lord who commands heavenly forces.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 30:8

  • “yoke” — עֹל (ʿol): A yoke is a bar used to harness working animals. Here the word pictures a people placed under another power’s control.
