Jeremiah 4:23 describes the land as though creation itself had come undone. Jeremiah sees a scene of emptiness and darkness, giving a stark picture of the destruction threatened in the passage.

The repeated words “I beheld” present the scene as something Jeremiah sees. His gaze moves from the earth to the heavens, making the whole visible world part of the picture.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 4:23

• “form” — תֹּהוּ (tohu): This word can describe a wasteland or an unformed place. Here it helps picture the earth as a place lacking order and features.
• “void” — בֹּהוּ (bohu): This word conveys emptiness. Together with “without form,” it is the same Hebrew word pair used to describe the earth in Genesis 1:2.

Why Jeremiah 4:23 matters
