What does Jeremiah 42:1 mean?

Jeremiah 42:1 describes a group approaching Jeremiah together. Military leaders and people of every rank come as a community to seek direction from God. The verse introduces their request, which begins in the next verse.

The narrator names Johanan and Jezaniah alongside the captains, giving the gathering identifiable leaders. “From the least even unto the greatest” pictures people across the social ranks, rather than leaders acting alone.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 42:1

• “forces” — חַיִל (ḥayil): The word can refer to strength or a fighting force. Here it identifies the captains as military leaders, not simply officials.
• “came near” — נָגַשׁ (nagash): The word carries the sense of approaching someone. Here it introduces a formal encounter that continues into the group’s request to Jeremiah.

Why Jeremiah 42:1 matters

• The gathering comes after a violent upheaval, not during an ordinary meeting. In the preceding chapter, Johanan’s forces recovered people who had been carried away after the killing of Gedaliah, the appointed governor.
• The people’s approach leads into a request for guidance about where to go and what to do. Jeremiah 42:3 gives their question; verse 1 shows that both leaders and other people are present as the request begins.
• The wide range of people matters for what follows. In Jeremiah 42:5–6, the group promises to obey the answer, so the opening verse helps the reader see who is represented in that promise.
