What does Job 22:14 mean?

Job 22:14 presents an accusation that Job thinks God is too distant to see what people do. Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends, puts this idea into Job’s mouth as part of his argument against him.

After asking what Job thinks God knows in verse 13, Eliphaz paints a picture of thick clouds hiding human affairs from God. The image of God walking along the “circuit of heaven” places him far above the earth, beyond the clouds.

The Hebrew behind Job 22:14

• “clouds” — עָבִים (ʿavim): The word refers to thick clouds. The Hebrew image suggests a dense barrier, fitting Eliphaz’s claim that God cannot see through them.
• “circuit” — חוּג (ḥug): The word can mean a circle or vault. Here it pictures the sky as a curved expanse along which God walks.

Why Job 22:14 matters

• The words are Eliphaz’s portrayal of Job’s thinking, not a statement the reader should automatically assign to Job. In verse 13, Eliphaz introduces the claim by saying to Job, “thou sayest.”
• Eliphaz uses the alleged belief to support a serious charge against Job. Just before this, Eliphaz accuses Job of wrongdoing, including taking people’s clothing and withholding food and water from those in need (verses 6–7).
• Job’s own words give the reader reason to question Eliphaz’s accusation. Earlier, Job says of God, “he knoweth the way that I take” (Job 23:10).
