What does Job 24:8 mean?

Job 24:8 describes people living in such severe poverty that they are exposed to mountain rain and must cling to a rock for shelter. Job presents their hardship as part of his account of the suffering that powerful people inflict on the poor.

Job is speaking to his friends as he challenges their understanding of how the world works. Following the description of people who lack clothing in verse 7, the image of embracing a rock pictures a desperate search for protection where no proper shelter is available.

The Hebrew behind Job 24:8

• “embrace” — חָבַק (ḥavaq): The word means to clasp or hold close. Job uses a word associated with holding someone to picture people pressing themselves against a rock.
